What is the machinability of 7075 aluminum?
7075 machines very well, with a machinability rating comparable to or better than 6061 in the T6 temper. Its higher strength increases cutting forces somewhat, but it produces excellent chip breaking and fine surface finishes. Tool life is generally good, and the main production challenge is distortion rather than cutting difficulty.
How is distortion controlled when machining 7075 aluminum?
Structural parts machined from plate often remove most of the stock volume, releasing residual stress and causing movement. Control comes from stress relieved tempers such as T651 or T7351, balanced material removal from both faces, staged roughing and finishing, and fixturing that constrains without inducing stress. Intermediate stress relief may be used on critical components.
Is 7075 suitable for screw-cutting and turned components?
Yes. 7075 turns well and produces clean, well-formed threads with good surface quality, making it suitable for high-strength turned and screw-machined parts. Its strength allows smaller thread forms to carry higher loads than equivalent 6061 components, which is valuable in weight-critical assemblies.
How does 7075 compare with 6061 for machined parts?
7075 offers roughly double the yield strength of 6061-T6, making it the choice for highly loaded structural components. 6061 has better corrosion resistance, is readily weldable and costs less. 7075 is generally not fusion welded and can be susceptible to stress corrosion cracking in the T6 temper, which the T73 tempers mitigate.
