What is 430 stainless steel?
430 is a ferritic stainless steel containing roughly 16 to 18% chromium and essentially no nickel. The absence of nickel makes it more economical and less exposed to nickel price volatility. It offers good corrosion resistance in mild environments and cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
How well does 430 stainless steel machine?
430 generally machines more easily than austenitic grades such as 304 and 316, because as a ferritic steel it work-hardens far less aggressively and produces more manageable chips. Sharp tooling and adequate coolant help prevent built-up edge, which is the most common cause of poor surface finish in this grade.
What is the difference between 430 and 430F stainless steel?
430F is the free-machining variant, with added sulphur to improve chip breaking and increase machining speeds. This makes it considerably more productive for high-volume turned components, at the cost of somewhat reduced corrosion resistance and weldability compared with standard 430.
What are machined 430 stainless steel parts used for?
430 is used for appliance and architectural components, decorative trim, enclosures, fasteners and general indoor hardware.
